The Psychology of Green

What’s in a color? More than you might think. Color isn’t just something we choose because it’s pretty or bright and attention getting. There is a whole psychology behind why we like or choose the colors that we do.

“Your surroundings may be influencing your emotions and state of mind? Do you ever notice that certain places especially irritate you? Or that certain places are especially relaxing and calming? Well, there’s a good chance that the colors in those spaces are playing a part.”

We choose certain colors to depict emotions and actions. When portraying recycling, for example, green has been used more heavily than any other color. Why?

The color green is associated with many word and emotions that go hand-in-hand with recycling, including the following:

  • Renewal
  • Natural
  • Balancing
  • Growth
  • Harmony
  • Health
“Did you know that Pantone named its 2017 Color of the Year to be “Greenery”? More than ever, the mindfulness on the environment and the go-green movement is taking place.

The color Greenery signifies nature and the environment. Besides literally seeing green in fashion and design this year, Greenery helped to keep the environment front-and-center this year.”

Just about every time you see some type of recycling symbol or images, the color green will be incorporated.
